There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

this entry brought to you by the roots, "rock you"

ATLANTA-- If you ask the average American about the country's most abundant resource, one might answer "beef", or perhaps our fruits and vegetables. This is far from the truth, however, as America's most abundant resource by far is something we all use every day without thinking about: dirt. And if you were to tell the average person that this country's abundance of dirt is quickly depleting, that person might laugh at you and say that there's plenty of dirt to go around. This is the exact mentality that has gotten us into trouble with our over dependence on quickly depleting oil, and it will get us into much more serious trouble with dirt.

"After some exhaustive studies over the past 20 years," says Dr. Peter Shaye, expert on America's growing dependence on dirt, "we've come to a startling conclusion: Within 20 years, the dirt reserves of the entire world will almost be completely dried up, and we will be in a state of emergency, as dirt plays a vital role in all parts of our lives."

How in the world did this happen? Dr. Shaye explains. "Dirt, as you may know, is a key component for the making of glass. Glass is made from a simple process of heating and pressurizing crude dirt into a liquid that, once solidifies into a pre-determined shape, becomes glass." Dr. Shaye explains that because of "exponentially increased need for glass year by year over the past twenty years," the country has had to dig deeper and deeper into its dirt reserves with increasing fervor to keep up with the sharply increasing demand for glass. "All these SUVs on the road all need to have windows, all these houses being built need to have windows, all the skyscrapers being built needs tons upon tons of glass, all the mirrors in the world need to have glass-- counting the city of Los Angeles alone, just the four things that I've mentioned have had a significant drain on the world's dirt reserves with billions of tons of glass. When you multiply that by every growing metropolis in the entire world, all with increasing need for glass, you can see how that could potentially cause disaster. Although when you look out your window you may see piles and piles of dirt all over the landscape, if we continue at our current rate, dirt will be as scarce as gold within 20 years."

What will the world be like without dirt? "Mass hysteria," Shaye says. "Without dirt, what will our children play on? Without dirt, how will there be baseball? Without dirt, where would we get all the glass we need for our daily lives? Imagine a world where women cannot put on make-up because they have no mirrors. Imagine a world where bird poop hits your dashboard because there was no windshield there to stop it. Imagine a world where criminals just climb into your house because there is no glass in the hole in your wall to stop them. It won't be a world worth living, I can tell you that."

Perhaps even grimmer than the thought of a world without glass is that Shaye cannot picture a scenario where the world's dirt won't be entirely consumed within a generation or two. "Basically, we're fucked," said Shaye. "Better start stockpiling your weapons right now. And please, don't breed, even if it means having to mutilate your own genitals."
