There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

Thin People with Fat Kids Don't Make Sense

this entry brought to you by beck, "we dance alone"

The other day we went out shopping, and I noticed several times a peculiar sight: pretty, trim, lovely looking mothers with heinously overweight kids. One particular kid was about 5 years old and was perhaps the fattest I'd ever seen a kid her age, and she had a sweet, doll-like face, and a delicate demeanor. It made me sad. I watched her for a few minutes, thinking her smoking-hot mom was perhaps an aunt or a babysitter, but she kept referring to the lady as "mom", and this disturbed me. When you see fat people with fat kids, you can make a few assumptions. "Genetics," you can think if you're being particularly kind. But more than likely you'll simply assume fat mom and fat dad transferred their fat lifestyle to their children-- what child is going to hold back on that second slice of cake when mom and dad are going back for their third? But when parents are trim and fit and their child fat, it implies a weird, very specific kind of spoiling. I'm of the opinion that you don't really need to have a specific diet for kids. Bascially you serve them smaller portions of what you eat make sure that you give them juice, milk, or water instead of whatever you're drinking. Everything else takes care of itself. So if you're trim and fit, it would be assumable that your children would eat a smaller portioned trim and fit diet. But if your kid isn't, this implies that you're eating salads and power bars and jogging, while you're encouraging them to eat KFC and watch TV. This does not make sense.

yesterday, last year pretty much a one note joke, but i still thought it was really funny. i like the timing in this gag, how it kind of just keeps going on. you could stop reading the entry half way through and still get the joke, but i think what makes it work is that he just keeps going.

on this day last year an thought on how i smack my ass to check my money in my pocket because i don't carry a wallet. not that interested.

Well, like we discussed before - there could be lots of reasons why this is. Maybe Mom was fat as a child and lost weight as she got older. Maybe Dad is fat and the child gets it from him. Or it could just be that Mom and Dad don't see anything wrong with letting their kids eat junk food all day long, who knows?
