There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

What I'm Afraid of At Parties And Get Togethers

Thursday, March 06, 2014

this entry brought to you by massive attack, "paradise circus"

I think my worst fear about going to a party isn't that somebody will be funnier than me, it's that someone will be as funny or funnier than me, but absolutely not play well and riff with other funny people, taking all the laughs for themselves. It's so much fun when you meet a funny person and there's no one-up-man-ship, and the two of you play together well. Unfortunately, most funny people find other funny people threatening, will step on your punch lines, will never give you a "yes, and", and will criticize your premises instead of playing along. I'm always afraid that person will show up and not allow the spot light to be shared. This person is even worse than a boring party full of starchy uptight assholes with no sense of humor. In that case you simply stick to yourself and leave early when you can. The funny guy who hogs all the attention is a nightmare because when you see him, you want to be funny with him, you see the potential, the way you can get along, and they just sit there and stomp on your every attempt, and you're forced to either back down and let them hog all the fun, or get into a comedy war, which never doesn't turn hostile.
