Pet Peeve: The Misuse of the Word "Invented"

Thursday, January 09, 2014

this entry brought to you by awolnation, "soul wars"

I hate it when people say that they "invented" something that does not require inventing. For example, they'll say that they "invented" a comic book character, or that a mathematician "invented" a new way to calculate math.

What they mean is they created those things. They were not in their garage, sweating over a hot soldering iron inventing that comic book character, they were not on-line, desperately searching for the right parts to get the exact thing they need for that new way of inventing. Which is to say that "inventing" is a physical process, whereas "creating" is an umbrella term that applies to all things that you come up with.
