There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

Nobody Thrives While Multitasking

this entry brought to you by radiohead, "down is the new up"

Have you ever heard someone saying that they concentrate better when they're multitasking? Did you know that this is bullshit? They've done multiple studies, and they've all come back conclusive: your brain isn't made to concentrate on more than one thing at a time. People think they're doing better when they're multitasking because multitasking stresses us out, and stress releases adrenaline, and it makes us feel like, holy shit, we just did a whole lot of work, when the truth is nothing we did was very, you know, good.

But it amazes me that we've created a culture where people actually think this. Of course you don't do better when you're doing a whole bunch of things at once. Yes, we're all wired a little differently, but nobody is wired that differently. There might be some people who are better at multitasking than others, but nobody thrives under these conditions. This just makes sense.

I think another reason why people say this is because they want to sound better at whatever job it is they're doing than everyone else. But I don't know why you'd want to brag that you can do a shitty job at a whole bunch of things at once than doing one thing well.
