There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

What My Daughter Really Thinks of Her Family

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

this entry brought to you by nine inch nails, "just like you imagined"

I have an 8 year old daughter whose name is Celest. She had written a paper that was supposed to be about her family at school, and while we were at a parent-teacher meeting I was reading over it.

"Lenore," she said, "is a baby. She's not even one year old yet so she doesn't have much of a personality. She cries and sleeps a lot. I love her a lot, and I like helping mommy and daddy out with her."

Awww, I said.

"Grandma," she said, "doesn't live with us anymore, but she used to live with us. She is great and funny. She is kind of mean sometimes, but she is nice."

Kind of mean? I knew what she meant, I guessed, because out of the three of us Grandma is definitely the strictest, so comparably, she's kind of mean, but compared to actual mean people, mom is an angel. This kind of stung a bit, but, well, this is an eight year old we're talking about.

"Mom," she said, "is so nice and so sweet. I love my mom so much. She helps me with my homework and whenever I get stuck in games."

Wait, what? First of all, Michelle almost always has the closing shift at her job, so it's usually me up with her in the evening. I'm usually the one helping her with her homework! I'm usually the one helping her when she gets stuck in games! What the hell was this kid on?

"My dad's Super Cool Awesome Rock N' Roll Life," she said. "My dad is so cool and he loves rock n' roll and he knows everything about rock n' roll and he plays video games with me."

So now I was torn. On the one hand, it will completely melt your heart when you find out that your 8 year old basically thinks you're a rock star. On the other hand, you will be unsure how to take it when your daughter will actually describe your wife as the actual parent in the family, while you, apparently, are some sort of goof-off doofus who takes no responsibility for anything.
