There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

Who Cares How Ignorant You Are About Illegal Immigrant Issues When You Love America?

this entry brought to you by thom yorke, "the eraser"

I have come across two different Facebook posts from two different people about illegal immigrants that had startlingly similar themes that I thought I would share.

There was this one, from a friend's Aunt.

I'm MOVING TO MEXICO Dear President Obama: I'm planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me. We're planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. Into Mexico, and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements. We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.

2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.

3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English.

4. I want my kids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers.

5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and history.

6. I want my kids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school.

7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services.

9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico, but, I don't plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws.

10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer.

11. I plan to fly the U.S. Flag from my house top, put U S. Flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.

12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.

13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy.

14. I want to receive free food stamps.

15. Naturally, I'll expect free rent subsidies.

16. I'll need Income tax credits so that although I don't pay Mexican Taxes, I'll receive money from the government.

17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Gov't pays $4,500 to help me buy a new car.

18. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I'll get a monthly income in retirement. I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who walk over to the U.S. From Mexico. I am sure that President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely. Thank you so much for your kind help. You're the man!!!

1) First of all, I hate these little emails that get spread around by conservatives. Maybe during the Bush years we had these little hateful emails that went around through liberal circles and I just don't remember them. Maybe I posted some myself. But the big difference between anything I read being circulated about Bush and these passed around by conservatives is that the liberal ones were factually true, unless, of course, if they were talking about 9/11 conspiracies. But seriously, Bush fucking tortured people. What is there to make up?

What's amazing about these conservative emails is how factually wrong they are, yet they're written with this tone as if the person who wrote it was so fucking proud of themselves, for one, being so fucking hateful for no goddamn reason, and 2) being completely incorrect. But either way, the Facebook re-posters themselves obviously thought they were being extremely clever. You know. For having found a thing and then copying it. I had the exact same comment about those Obama-as-Joker sheets that were showing up in the city. Hey, way to print a thing off the Internet. You go, guy.

2) It seems completely pointless to go through this on a point-by-point basis noting where she's wrong, because the concept of the whole thing is completely baseless. Legal immigrants are allowed to use some programs, just like poor white people are entitled to some programs. And if these hideously egotistic "patriots" are complaining about legal immigrants, then they need to move back to whatever country it is their parents came from, because nobody is actually from here except the Native Americans. But I don't need to point that out to anybody, do I?

3) As to the idea that Mexicans shouldn't be allowed driver's license and health care: Why wouldn't you want Mexicans to have health care? Why would you want sick Mexicans? It's not like you can take the attitude "So they're sick. Let them be sick." Sickness tends to spread.

When they first invented fire departments it was privatized. You bought fire insurance. If your house caught on fire and you didn't pay for fire insurance, your hose burnt down. Do you know the reason they stopped that? Because fire tends to spread. Letting the house that caught on fire burn tended to spread the fire over to the next house, who maybe did pay for the fire insurance. And by then the fire was so huge that it was something that couldn't be stopped and whole neighborhoods would burn down.

Sickness is sort of the same way. I don't get why you'd want sick Mexicans. You can not want them here all you want, just as you could want your neighbors to have fire insurance 200 years ago. You can want things, but that's not going to change the reality.

And you know what else? Have you ever been in a car accident with an illegal immigrant? It messes everything up, because they don't have insurance. Yet here we have people complaining about how the driver's test is also in Spanish (as well as a myriad of other languages). Why would you want Mexicans driving around without drivers licenses? How is insisting that a driver's test be in English-- so people who are still learning the language but are here legally, for example-- making anyone actually safer? But when you're an American and you're white you don't have to think your stupid arguments through. So long as they don't ever infringe on white people's rights. Which George Bush did all the time, but that wasn't worth complaining about.

4) I like how this person addresses the letter to Barack Obama, even though immigration laws have been exactly the same forever, and nothing has changed since Obama. So not only does this letter overtly blame Mexicans, but it implicitly blames blacks. Don't you love how racism works?

Before I get into my final thought about this Facebook post, I'd like to share a second Facebook post, from a completely unrelated person:

YOU PASS THE NORTH KOREAN BORDER ILLEGALLY YOU GET 12 YRS HARD LABOR, YOU PASS THE AFGHAN BORDER ILLEGALLY YOU GET SHOT. YOU PASS THE AMERICAN BORDER ILLEGALLY YOU GET A JOB, DRIVER'S LICENSE, ALLOWANCE FOR A PLACE TO LIVE, HEALTH CARE, EDUCATION, BILLIONS OF DOLLARS SPENT SO YOU CAN READ A DOCUMENT. WE CARRY PASSPORTS IN OTHER COUNTRIES OR FACE JAIL TIME. REPOST THIS IF YOU AGREE!!

5) Did you notice that in the first post, the subject was about how Mexico wouldn't treat its illegal immigrants the same way? And how this second person is so proud they noticed that Afghanistan and North Korea don't treat their illegal immigrants the same way?

Do these two people, and therefore the idiots who reposted this, not understand the difference between third world countries and America, the world's richest country?

Mexico is a third world country so poor that people are willing to risk death in the desert being migrated to another country by the thousands, a country where the drug lords have gotten so powerful they kill innocents on a daily basis without retribution. Afghanistan, for the past 30 years, is a war-torn country where people literally live in caves and the largest national export is heroin. North Korea starved its people for a period of years, to the point that even today, their people live shorter lives and are, on average, three inches less in height than their South Korean counterparts.

These ignorant half-wits are so eager to find a point-- any point at all-- to blame minorities on our ills, they're willing to make the argument that they'd like to compare America unfavorably to third-world death traps.

You know what, maybe they're right. Why isn't America more like some shithole people are desperate to get out of and, if they're not, they're brainwashed into thinking their leader is a literal God who can do no wrong? That's such a valid point, I can't believe sane, non-racist, non-hateful people hadn't come up with it already.
