There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

Throwing Your Jacket in the Mud For a Lady

Thursday, March 18, 2010

this entry brought to you by trail of dead, "days of being wild"

As an adult, I am starting to believe that the image of a gentleman putting his jacket in the mud in order for a lady to cross it so she doesn't get her shoes wet/ dress get splashed on never actually happened. Nowadays with cheap foreign/child labor, jackets don't cost much-- but back then jackets cost significantly more, and you had one of them. But even if you had multiple jackets, this still doesn't make any sense as a gentlemanly gesture. Asking the driver of your horse-drawn carriage to simply pull up a few feet so she doesn't step into the gutter makes much more sense, or better yet, simply carrying a woman a couple feet gets the whole job done that much quicker, and you're not left walking around with a sopping, ruined, expensive jacket.

I think if there were ever a man that took off his jacket in the cold and dropped it in the mud so that a woman wouldn't get her shoes wet wasn't just a gentleman, but also a mentally retarded person, completely unaware of the practicality of the world.
