There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

"One buh-billion dollars..."

this entry brought to you by hot chip, "ready for the floor"

Like most humans, when I'm around someone who I enjoy, I tend to be influenced by them in ways that I don't mean to intentionally. For example, when you've got a friend who says a particular thing, sometimes you'll pick up the habit of saying it without even realizing.

Let me give you an example. I've listened to a daily podcast called Keith and the Girl for the past two years, and whenever Keith Malley, the host, wants to use a gigantic, nonsensical number, he'll say "Buh-billion." As in, "John ran over Tex's dog, so Tex is suing him for a buh-billion dollars."

I've picked up on this. And what's frustrating is when I say this unthinkingly, and somebody might hear it and just think this is the funniest fucking thing. "A buh-billion! Haahhahahaa! A buh-billion! Oh Chris, you're too clever."

This makes me feel uncomfortable. For one, it's not that clever. Not enough to make someone laugh out loud for it especially. It's just a cute thing to say, but whatever. But the worst part is that they think I'm the one that made it up, but explaining to them where I got it from would be too complicated, so I just let them go on thinking I came up with it. Which makes me feel like a thief.
