There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

The Truth About Caillou

this entry brought to you by flight of the concords, "think about it"

i Have you ever watched Caillou? The main character is supposed to be 4 years old, bald, and for some reason, nobody notices what a whiny little snot he is. When most children are four, parents normally stop putting up with that obnoxious baby voice he has, and the constant whining.

Caillou, however, has leukemia, and it's difficult not to spoil a kid who has cancer. Caillou will ask for something and his dad will say "No, sorry buddy, but you don't need that," and Caillou starts to throw a temper tantrum. Dad is right about to scream about him when he thinks-- "I can't yell at Caillou! He's such a brave little guy! I can't yell!" And instead he patiently says "Sorry Caillou, you don't need that toy right now."

The family will be out at the park and Caillou will want to play with a child who, unbeknownst to him, is deaf, and when Caillou asks to play and the child doesn't respond, Caillou throws a fit. "Mommeeeee! That kid won't pway wif me!" And the deaf kid's mom will see all of this happen and will almost say "Hey, what the fuck? My kid's deaf, why is your kid such a little shit?" And that's when she sees his bald head and will say "Oh my god, that brave little guy!", and will then politely go up to Caillou's parents and say "My son can't hear you! Here, I'll teach you how to sign so you can play with him!"

The secret behind Caillou is that he's a little shit, and people let him get away with it because of cancer. It's like kryptonite.
