There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

People Who Don't Mind Warrantless Wiretapping Because They Have Nothing To Hide

this entry brought to you by radiohead, "the amazing sounds of an orgy"

There are a lot of people who, oddly, have no problem with wireless wiretapping. It's true that I think there are a lot of people who go fucking overboard with privacy, refusing to give their social security number over the phone to, like, the phone company, despite the fact that your social security number is already sitting on their screen and they're just asking for it to confirm the person is who they say they are. And while I think these people are a nuisance and paranoid, they make much more sense to me than people who openly say they don't care about warrantless wiretapping. "If it means they catch terrorists, then yeah, let them tap our phones. I have nothing to hide anyway," they say.

Fine. Let's say you don't have anything to hide.

But let's say the government suspects someone innocent of any wrongdoing as having information they want. Now, you might say, the government would only wiretap someone for good reason. But if they only wiretapped someone they had good reason to wiretap, then they would just get a warrant, wouldn't they? If they had plenty of legitimate reason to suspect someone of wrongdoing or plotting wrongdoing, then they could just take those legitimate reasons to court and get a warrant. The warrantless wiretap is specifically there so they can wiretap anybody.

So let's say your next door neighbor was in the vicinity of an area where some terrorists got together, and somehow the government decided to try their luck and wiretap your next door neighbor and listen to all of his conversations.

Now, you're an American. You've heard people have conversations on the phone before. People's conversations are bullshit. Hours and hours a day. All bullshit, all utterly useless.

You say that you care about the government catching the bad guys, but if you support the government placing some agent in a desk sifting through hours and hours of absolutely useless information all day until they get tired of it, wasting man power that could've been used wiretapping people with legitimate reason to be wiretapped (that could've just gotten a warrant for), wasting tax payer money to pay that guy, wasting resources, wasting all this for absolutely no reason, then how are you supporting the government catching bad guys?.

Maybe you don't have anything to hide. But if you really care about bad guys getting caught, then you should have reason to worry about warrantless wiretapping.
