There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

The Cosby Show Vs. 7th Heaven

this entry brought to you by david cronenberg's wife "i'm on the booze, mama"

I was watching The Cosby Show the other day, and it was an episode from the first season, back in 1984, where they found a joint inside one of Theo's books. The Huxtables cornered Theo in the kitchen and confronted him, and he denied that it wasn't weed. Claire told him she wasn't an idiot. Theo admitted what it was, but insisted it wasn't his. Cliff looked him dead in the eye and said "Listen, son. You've done a lot of good things. You've done some bad things. Mostly you've done good things. And if it's one thing you've never done, it's lie to me. You're telling me this joint isn't yours?" Theo says it's not his. Cliff gives him a beat, still staring at him with Dad eyes, and says "Good. Then this is over."

Now, being a dad, I can say that I feel that it was a pretty honest and realistic depiction of what a family would and should actually do if they find a joint in their teenaged son's stuff.

...There was an episode of 7th Heaven where the parents found a joint in their daughter's stuff, and Oh my fucking god all hell broke loose. Fucking walls were collapsing, bleeding, storm clouds were bursting with lightning and fucking hellfire, there was a plague of fucking locusts and then frogs, Mom is bawling, "Oh my god my daughter is smoking marijuana, I'm a bad parent! What did I do, what did I do to make my daughter turn out to be this way?" and dad was holding her saying, "It's okay honey, it had to have been all my fault. When she was eight years old I was building a table I bought from Ikea and I hit my thumb with a hammer and I said 'Dammit'. Curse my foul mouth! Curse it to gosh darn heck!" it was goddamn Armageddon, all over a marijuana cigarette. And this show was in 1996, more than ten years later.

Which just goes to show you, as with all things in pop culture, Black people did it first, and Black people did it better!
