There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

My Movie Sacred Cow

this entry brought to you by scissor sisters, "laura"

I don't consider many things to be sacred cows, pop culture wise. There's The Simpsons of course, whenever I find out that someone has never really watched The Simpsons or, worse, dislikes The Simpsons, I am utterly baffled, mildly offended, and my opinion of that person alters. But I feel like The Simpsons is a touchstone pretty much everyone in my generation agrees on-- even if you don't watch it anymore and just enjoyed the first eight seasons, you recognize that The Simpsons is one of the most important pop culture pieces in history. That's just how it is. So for me to call it a sacred cow is a bit of a gimme.

I was thinking about sacred cows, and I suddenly remembered one: Ghostbusters. I've always loved Ghostbusters, and recently re-watched it for the first time in years, and it was absolute genius. I have never loved Ghostbusters more than when I watched it as an adult. It was like seeing a whole new layer of it. It's got exactly the right formula to enthrall you as a child, but when you're an adult, you realize the movie is specifically made for adults, the fact that it's enrapturing to children is almost incidental. I was almost shocked at how perfect it was, how note-for-note funny it was.

Recently I was having a conversation with people mostly younger than me, but a few people were older. The movie Friday came up, and more than one person said it was the funniest movie they'd ever seen. I've never actually seen Friday, but some people whose opinions I trust have seen it, and they've all told me the movie is hilarious. I'm sure I'll see it and enjoy it, even love it. I just couldn't see how it could be the funniest movie ever, in anyone's opinion.

Someone asked me what I thought the funniest movie ever was, and I replied that it would have to be Ghostbusters. It was one thing to reply that you didn't think it was the funniest movie ever-- but they scoffed and replied that Friday was way, way funnier than Ghostbusters.

Again, I've never seen Friday. And again, I'm sure it's funny. But funnier than Ghostbusters? That kind of thing almost entirely turns me off of the very idea of watching Friday, because clearly there's no way it could hold up. It was as if hearing someone saying that Friends was funnier than The Simpsons. I've only seen one episode of Friends all the way through, but clearly anybody claiming Friends is better than The Simpsons is a fucking idiot with no appreciation for humor. And I understand that Friends is a very, very popular show, in fact, is one of the most popular shows ever. But better than The Simpsons? I don't even need to watch the show to tell you that you've got to be kidding me to claim that.
