There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

Calm Down. President Barack Obama Won't Be Assassinated

this entry brought to you by saul williams, "sunday, bloody sunday"

Virtually every single person I've talked to has told me that they think Barack Obama is going to be assassinated. What's interesting about this is that most people say it in a tone as if they were the first person to come up with that, or as if they hadn't heard it from anyone else yet. They say it in an affirmative, conspiratorial tone. "If you ask me, I'm glad for Obama, but I think he's going to be assassinated. I'm just saying."

I have to say, I really, really don't think this is going to happen. Believe me, I'm afraid of it, just like I'd be afraid of any President who I had invested a lot of energy and passion into would be assassinated. And I'm going to say this right now: I'm not saying President Obama won't be assassinated. What I am saying is this: Barack Obama has exactly as much chance to be assassinated as every other President. Which is to say it won't happen.

Because think about it. Yes, there are a bunch of rednecks who don't want a black man president, and there are probably a bunch of people who are making plans to do it right this moment.

But let me put it this way: President Bush was at many points during the last eight years the least popular person in the entire world. Less popular than Osama Bin Laden. There was a vast Islamo Fascist conspiracy to blow up the World Trade Center in New York city, and they accomplished that. They also sent a plane to crash into the Pentagon.

...Yet even this vast network of Islamo fundamentalist suicide bombers, who didn't hate Bush for something petty like race, but because of everything he stood for, for everything they hate in the entire world. His existence as President wasn't just something they disliked, it was their entire being. The dedicated their very lives-- literally-- to getting George Bush. And yet somehow George Bush lives to this day.

Yes, we've had a young, promising, progressive President that's been murdered in some American's lifetime. But firstly, the technology they had to prevent President Kennedy's assassination was primitive compared to today. Secondly, even if Lee Harvey Oswalt was the lone gunman and even if the government hasn't covered up anything in his case, Oswalt was a part of much bigger conspiracy. They didn't just want Kennedy, they wanted his brother, too. But here's the most important part: even though the technology to track bad guys and protect the President was much less sophisticated than it is nowadays, they still knew about it before hand. President Kennedy was warned multiple times against going to Dallas, and yet he ignored those warnings because he felt it was necessary.

Furthermore, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, yes, but he was also on the FBI's shit list. I'm not saying they killed him or allowed him to be killed, what I'm saying is he wasn't exactly a person they were protecting. Obama, on the other hand, is, as of today, the most powerful man on the planet, a man dozens of men have sworn their lives to protect.

So, given these facts, what in the world makes you think some shmuck with a rifle who looks at the TV and says "I cain't stand them niggers, I is gon' have tuh do somefin' about this," is going to accomplish his mission? And furthermore, why would they wait this long to do so? It's not as if Barack Obama's victory came as a surprise to anybody-- he has been the clear front winner for victory since at least June. What in the world makes you think that somebody who feels so strongly against having a black President would wait until he has even more protection than he would've had six months ago? What makes you think he'd watch the Democratic convention speech and say, "Nah, I'll give him a few more months," and then with every progressive notch he took further, repeatedly put it off, saying "Enh, but I'll still give this guy a chance," would wait until now to try something, even though now he's got a small army of secret service members all willing to take a bullet for him?

Again, I'm not saying Barack Obama will not get assassinated. Hell, even Reagan was shot by a crazy dude who wanted to impress Jodi Foster, so clearly anything is possible. But think about this: Bill Clinton was extremely unpopular amongst Republicans, and still is to this day. There are still groups of people who spit when they say his name. And again, George Bush has been consistently on the top of the list of most hated people in the world, and the worst that happened to that guy is he got shoes thrown at him, and, at one point, got a black eye from a pretzel. I really don't think we need to be worried Obama is going to be assassinated, at least, not any more than we were afraid of anybody else being assassinated.

And with that, may Obama's Presidency be fortuitous and prosperous. And may God, if there is one, bless him, and America.
