There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

John Kerry in '04 Was Just a Warm-Up for These Monsters

Thursday, December 27, 2007

this entry brought to you by nine inch nails, "and all that could have been"

I was listening to a political program earlier and I was hearing about the primaries. I started thinking about the general election back in '04, and how happy I was that John Kerry became the Democratic runner. I was a Kerry fan before he was nominated, and I voted for him-- would vote for him again during this election, frankly. I felt like the media treated him unfairly, as it amazes me talking about Kerry this many years later and how many people still say that Kerry's downfall was that he was a flip-flopper. I calmly tell them that Kerry wasn't the flip-flopper, Bush was, and that it was the media that somehow painted him that way. They rarely listen, but it's the truth, and any casual perusal of the facts will reveal that. Kerry was the victim of a vicious, multi-headed monster of a smear campaign that managed to convince people of lies.

One of the most egregious things that I remember about the smear campaign against Kerry, and indeed pretty much the most heinously, offensively petty thing I've heard about any candidate ever, was that John Kerry's Purple Heart wasn't really deserved. He didn't get injured that bad was the argument. I actually heard people saying this, too-- "John Kerry isn't a war veteran, he's a traitor!" would come their rhetoric. "He didn't even get shot that bad! It was like a paper cut!" The opposition would even show up during Kerry speeches wearing purple band-aids, to mock his heroism.

McCain isn't in the front running, and has no chance in hell of winning the Republican Nomination. But imagine the reaction if people laughed at McCain, said he wasn't really a war hero, and sure, he was captured and held as a P.O.W, but really, it wasn't that bad, he ate two square meals a day and was barely even tortured. What a wimp. Imagine what kind of reaction that would get-- and nobody even gives a damn about McCain during this primary, so he's very open to all kinds of criticism. Nevertheless, that kind of attack on his character would be absolutely unconcionable. Yet it's the very same bullshit the maniacs on the right got away with during the Kerry campaign for presidency.

You might accuse me of being bitter because my guy didn't win four years ago, and I should get over it because it's been four years. I respond by saying, 1) look at the past four years and tell me why I shouldn't be bitter, and 2) I'm over it, but I dread the kind of horseshit the conservative right will fling at whoever the Democratic nominee is next year. They don't have a chance in hell to win next year's election, and it's for this very reason that they'll pull out all the stops in their heinous smear campaigns. John Kerry in '04 was just a warm up.
