There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

GENERAL MILLS STOCK UP AFTER ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW LUCKY CHARM

this entry brought to you by modest mouse, "florida"

LEXINGTON-- On June 26th when General Mills announced that it would be having a stock holder's meeting on Tuesday, July 3rd, rumors began circulating that there would be a corresponding press release that would make stock holders very, very happy. Internet Blogger Mr.Flakes of the popular cereal blog partofthisnutrionalbreakfast.com, even posted the day after the announcement saying: "The entire world awaits this exciting new announcement as speculation runs rampant. Popular opinion seems to be that General Mills is going to announce a tie-in with the upcoming Bee Movie starring Jerry Seinfeld for their 'Honey Nut Cheerios' line, but I personally am betting on an announcement along the lines of some sort of new word game to appear on the back of the boxes for 'Cinnamon Toast Crunch', which hasn't gotten much attention for years now."

Since the announcement, General Mills' stock has been creeping up in heavy anticipation. After discussing at length their fiscal business of the past year during the stock holder's meeting which was held yesterday, company CEO Theodore Maverick dropped the bomb that their investors were so eager to hear, an announcement that shocked industry speculators, none of whom had been expecting what they heard: General Mills' "Lucky Charms" cereal line, starting on September 23rd of this year, will feature a new marshmallow shaped Lucky Charm. Although Maverick did not reveal yet what the new Lucky Charm might be, he did say that it was "the luckiest charm of all", and that "children everywhere will hysterically beam with excitement once they see it", and although the flavor of the marshmallow shape will be no different than any of the previous shapes, children that were the first to experience it will be "envied amongst their peers, who will then rush home to insist that Mommy and Daddy buy a new box of Lucky Charms that very instant." Maverick added that the "landscape for cereal will never quite be the same again". The CEO then went on to say that focus testing in selected markets had been "through the roof", and that they expect to begin a heavy marketing blitz for the exciting new addition to one of the most popular cereals September 9th, a full two weeks before it is expected to hit the market, which will include the usual outlet of TV, but will also feature prominently in the radio ads, as product placement in several upcoming Hollywood movies, as well as posters spread throughout heavy metropolitan areas. There will even be heavy promotion in popular websites such as Myspace, and a tie-in website, NewLuckyCharm.com will be launched. Theodore even mentioned that there will be a "heavy effort" at a viral marketing campaign, starting with Youtube and then to spread elsewhere. Theodore Maverick ended the shareholder's meeting stating "The paradigm for cereal has always been lead by General Mills, and through this new Lucky Charm, we feel more than confident that we will continue to be heralded as the industry innovators and leaders for many years to come."

Since the announcement yesterday, stock in General Mills has rocketed up a staggering 24%, which is up 13% from this same point in the last fiscal year.
