Why Isn't REM Awesome Anymore?

I was thinking about REM a few days ago, and I reliazed, you know, it's been a long time since REM has been awesome. Seriously, when was the last time they were awesome? Their last major evolutionary step, Up, which was made after the departure of their drummer, sounded different and was experimental, yet it was not awesome-- in fact, I think I've only heard it once. So when was the last time REM was awesome? Probably as far back as 1994's Monster.

I propose that REM needs to make a comeback album. Something raw and energetic. Something weird and slightly edgy. Something that doesn't sound like if it got any radio play, it would only be on adult contemporary radio or lame, Disney-owned alterna-lite stations. They should get together with producer Rick Rubin (who produced Johnny Cash's comeback albums, as well as Stadium Arcadium, Red Hot Chili Peppers' newest release) and really go all-out, do something to make people care about them again. Even if it doesn't sell 5 million copies and make all the kids fall in love with them, it would be nice for fans if they were awesome again.
