There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

Conservatism Can't Win

this entry brought to you by nine inch nails, "closer"

I do hate what the conservative mind is doing to the country. It has ruined our economy, ruined our government, allowed the idiot religious minority enough voice to oppress women's civil rights, education, and science, it has apologized for overindulgence in the military, war, torture, spying on our own people, and the general disregard of every aspect of American life except a small, select set of "morals" that never really existed. And it's not just here in America-- these very same minds are also digging their fingers into the rest of the world.

Yet, while I hate conservatism throughout my soul, I'm not afraid of it. I don't think they're going to bring about the downfall of America. I don't think they're going to pull the world back into the Stone Age. I don't think that the wave of lunacy that is increasingly splitting this world apart will every bring about the end times that they seem so feverishly willing to see. I know a lot of young liberals who genuinely worry about these things, and yes, I worry about it too-- pretty much every hour of every day. Yet, I remain optimistic. The liberal mind must prevail. It can't not prevail. Conservatism, by definition, means "less of", or, in political terms, less of the status quo. Liberalism, on the other hand, by definition, means "more of", or more of the status quo. Another way to look at it is like a tide on the beach. There is progress and recession. No matter how hard you try you cannot stop progress. It must happen. Whenever the water pulls too far back, you're about to witness a tidal wave. This is the law of nature. Progress must move forward, it cannot move backward. This isn't just philosophy, this is history. Throughout every single moment of mankind, conservatives have always clung tenaciously to their outdated and ridiculous morals, often to the point of being willing to kill for them, and every single time progress has drowned them. Public stoning, witch hunting, slavery, bans on literacy for the common man, the oppression of women-- all ideas that were drowned, sometimes kicking and screaming, by progress.

I am, of course, afraid of just how far back the water can recede before it comes back with its progress-pushing vengeance. I'm afraid of just how much damage they'll do until then, and I'm afraid of what we'll have to do to get things back so that things can move forward. But I know they'll never win. They can't win.

on this day last year you know, considering this was the return of jerry the g-thug, one of my favorite characters, this entry isn't that funny.
