There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

In Memory of the "Phone Off the Hook" Tone

Friday, May 12, 2006

this entry brought to you by sleater-kinney, "what's mine is your's"

Do you remember when the "phone off the hook" tone would go on forever? You would come home from work and hear that awful noise and you'd say "Oh shit! The phone's been off the hook all day!" I used to know this Korean kid when I was in the 3rd grade whose family regularly kept the phone off the hook, and I had no idea how they could continue existing with that horrendous going on constantly. It used to be even an element in old suspense thrillers. A man would come home, the door is ajar, and he walks in and the "off the hook" tone is blaring in the background, so now he knows something is definitely wrong, and sure enough, he finds his wife murdered.

Nowadays that tone barely lasts long than a minute, tops. What the hell is the point in that? Why even bother having a tone if it's only going to be that short? Does it cost more electricity to have that noise going than not? Nowadays if you come home and your wife has been murdered and you hear the phone off the hook, the killer is probably still there! In fact, you probably will be tipped off by hearing someone saying, "I've just killed someone! I gotta get outta here!"
