An Open Letter to Gwen Stefani from a Hollaback Girl
this entry brought to you by massive attack, "inertia creeps"

Mrs. Stefani, RE: Your use of the term "Hollaback Girl".
As a hard working American Hollaback Girl, I must take exception to the use of the phrase "Hollaback Girl" in your song of the same name in which you repeatedly state that you are not a Hollaback Girl. In fact, your assertion that you are not a Hollaback Girl is definitely agreeable. Although you are a popular musician and Hollaback Girls all over the world have appreciated your music for about a decade, you are, in fact, not a Hollaback Girl. A professional Hollaback Girl takes deep pride in her work and strives to always give 100% in her holla-ing back; "underachieving" is not in a Hollaback Girl's vocabulary.
What offends myself and those of us in the Hollaback profession isn't neccesarily the sudden unasked for attention of our profession. There was once a time when I could do my job, holla-ing back in peace, and now I can scarcely go a day without some yokel shouting "Hey! Look at her! She's a Hollaback Girl!" However, what does offend us is the implication that being a Hollaback Girl is in some fashion a bad thing.
Mrs. Stefani, while you may not appreciate the hardwork, the dedication, and the importance of a Girl Who Hollas Back, let me assure you: it is as neccesary as any other job in America, and in some cases more neccesary. It is also not an easy job-- I have put in many a 60 or 70 hour work-week holla-ing back! If a certain Gwen Stefani were to suddenly give up her career, there would instantly be several more pop stars very willing to replace her. If I, or any of my Hollaback Associates decided to quit and stop holla-ing back, how many qualified Hollaback Girls would there be to replace us, let alone would take the time to give the Hollaback service the dedication it needs to keep the foundation of Hollaback running? None, I would think.
In closing, Mrs. Stefani, you aren't a Hollaback Girl. Because a true Hollaback Girl would be much more professional and wouldn't speak ill about something she knew nothing about.
Signed,
Margaret Hutchison, Hollaback Girl
