Happy April Fool's Day, Assholes
this entry brought to you by sleater-kinney, "far away"
April Fool's Day started off hundreds of years ago when Christians changed the calendar new year from April 1st, as it had been traditionally celebrated by the pagans to January 1st. The remaining saps who didn't get the memo and celebrated in April were derided as fools.
I've always thought April Fool's Day was an odd celebration. Giving people permission to be assholes to one another just seems like a bad idea, and we've all read magazines that run an April Fool's Day joke every year, and once in a while still get duped even when we know they're going to try to fool us.
Yeah, yeah, I know it's all in good fun, but that's implying that it's always fun to be fooled, and it's not. I hate that saying anyway. "All in good fun." No, all in good fun is playing Yahtzee. All in good fun isn't where everyone else-- or worse, a small group of people, is having fun and you aren't. So, as a big "fuck you" to April Fool's Day, I'm not going to try to prank you or joke with you. Instead, I'll tell you a truth:
On a long enough time-line, after you die, even if you manage to leave behind world-changing accomplishments, as a person, you will be completely forgotten and unloved.
