If I were a supervillain, and I'd kidnapped the hero's love interest because I'd fallen in love with her myself, and I'm in my fortress, and I suspect that the hero might show up at any moment to get his girl back, and she suddenly seems to be completely in love with me and starts complimenting my ego by saying how handsome I am, when just minutes before she was repulsed, I'm not going to fall for it. You want to know why? Because that means the hero secretly broke into my fortress, and is sneaking around the room right now, and is about to lay the smack down on me. I'm not stupid. How could she ever love a supervillain like me?
