There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

An email I sent a friend about Myspace bots

this entry brought to you by nirvana, "i hate myself and to die"

Hi Eve. So I get a random message from a girl named Christy, who says she's new to Phoenix, and wants to meet people, and yadda yadda, and she says I seem cool and to write her back if I'm interested in chatting. And she says she's difficult to get ahold of on Myspace, but she checks her email constantly so write her there. And this strikes me as a little odd, because who has time to check their email but not their myspace?

So I write her back and I'm like, well, okay, first of all I think you might be a bot, but I'm not a rock star, there's no reason for me to not be a nice guy and not write you back. So write back if you'd like, and we'll chat.

Then when I woke up the next morning, I was like, you know, that's kind of rude. Here's this person trying to make friends and right off the bat I accuse her of being a bot. I thought that was kind of mean of me, so I wrote her again and said I was sorry if I came off rude, to please go ahead and email me and we'll chat.

...Of course she turned out to send me another email advertising some porn site. I think she's a real person, but I think her only purpose on Myspace is to advertise her porn site.

And... Suddenly my feelings are kind of her. Not because she's a bot, I suspected her of being a bot from the first minute I read her mail. But because I felt BAD for feeling like she may have been a bot. I actually felt guilt for calling a bot on what they were before I knew for sure! I actually CARED for a second. This bot made me care!

So yeah. Now I'm all melancholy. Does this happen to girls? Do you ladies get spammers pretending to be real people looking for friends?
