My revolutionary Cable TV idea
this entry brought to you by portishead, "glory box"
You want to know why I don't have cable? It's not because I think it's too much. Well, actually, I do. I mean, 80 bucks a month? Nuh-uh. But what really bothers me is 80 bucks a month, and all I'll end up watching is Comedy Channel, Cartoon Network, MTV2, Gameshow Network or History Channel if I'm really bored, and Independent Film Channel. That's it. Yes, channel per channel, 80 bucks is real cheap for a hundred gazillion channels. It works out to pennies a channel. And that's great. But why not charge me more for the few channels I'd watch? I would pay 2, 3 bucks a month for each channel. It's seriously like 500% more than what they're worth on basic cable, but I mean, it's the only thing I'd watch, and it would mean my bill was between 10 and 15 bucks. And 15 bucks for something I'll actually watch seems a lot more sensible than 80 bucks for something I'll never watch.
With the success of Itunes and pay-per-view, it's clear people will pay a premium for what they want, so long as it's exactly what they want. So why not start this with cable?
