There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

FACT: Hip-Hop all sounds the same

Tuesday, July 26, 2005

this entry brought to you by queens of the stone age, "burn the witch"

Hip-hop music all sounds the same. No, really, it does. Whenever I say this, someone who is playing the Devil's Advocate will say that, well, to a hip-hop lover, all rock music sounds the same. And this is true. A hip-hop lover will say that. Except they'd be saying it in ignorance.

To imply that modern hip-hop doesn't all the same is silly and seems to be missing half the point of hip-hop. Turning on the radio right now, you'll here, over the next hour, perhaps 5 different producers, maybe six or seven. Furthermore, with every commercial rap album featuring at least one guest rap, I guarantee that there will be more than two rappers or singers that will show up multiple times, and it's possibly you won't even hear their own songs. Furthermore, when someone has a great hook, it's not uncommon for rappers to steal it and put their own spin on it. And when somebody uses a hot sample, other producers instant start sampling from the same and the same genre of music.

Does this mean rock music doesn't sound the same? Well, yeah, I mean, for a while there every band sounded like Nickelback, hard rock radio still hasn't gotten over Papa Roach and their ilk, and I'll be damned if I can tell a single emo band from another. But rock music has more than four or five producers making 95% of the hit music on the radio, and guest appearances on another's songs is an extremely rare surprise, not the norm.
