There's an old saying. If you don't want someone to join a crowd, you ask them, "If everyone were jumping off of a cliff, would you?" Well, I have. So my answer would be "Yes". True story.

Dropping The Flag On The Ground

Monday, April 19, 2010

this entry brought to you by minus the bear, "the game needed me"

I remember I was in the third grade and I'm not sure why I was holding a flag, but I remember I accidentally dropped it on the ground and this old man-- I had no idea who he was or where he came from-- suddenly burst in my face and started yelling at me about how dare I disrespect the flag, how people died for it, and telling me I had to now burn that flag.

Have you ever heard this? That you're supposed to burn a flag after you drop it on the ground? I get that dropping a flag on the ground is disrespectful if done in protest, but even then that seems like a pretty harsh reaction to something so slight in the big scheme of things. Plus, doesn't that seem more like it's punishing the flag than it is punishing the person who dropped the flag in the first place? What in the hell did the flag do to deserve being burned?

It'd be like if you were at a family get together and you accidentally spilled a glass of wine on Grandma, and some old patriot came out of nowhere and screamed that this was a huge disrespect to your Grandmother, so now you have to rape her. You know, to show respect.

in 7th grade, my friend and i decided we were no longer going to say the pledge, because as all rebellious youth figure out, the "under god" thing was against our beliefs.

so, we didn't say the morning pledge. our science teacher did the same thing as old guy in your story... got into our faces and shouted some crap about some crap. we got sent to the principal's office. it's very bizarre... rituals regarding the flag... so uppity.

oh, and like we cared. we just started calling that teacher captain america from that day forward.
